The Real Tree Masters Lead the Way in Enacting Tree Removal Protection Laws in Greater Toronto Area Cities

Toronto, ON, Canada, June 20, 2023 – Preserving the natural environment is paramount in the active cities of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With rapid urbanization and development, protecting green spaces and ensuring the well-being of the trees that adorn the cityscape has become crucial. Enacting tree removal protection laws brings numerous benefits to the communities and the environment. By preserving urban green spaces, these laws contribute to residents’ overall quality of life. Trees are vital in mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and reducing noise pollution. Additionally, the regulations ensure the health and safety of trees, preventing the removal of structurally sound and healthy trees without valid reasons.

Tree removal protection laws are regulations to safeguard trees from unnecessary and indiscriminate removal. These laws aim to maintain the ecological balance, enhance the aesthetic appeal of the cities, and protect the community’s overall well-being. By implementing these laws, Greater Toronto Area cities can ensure that the removal of trees is carried out responsibly and with proper consideration for the environment.

Tree removal by-laws differ from one municipality to the other. Municipalities like Toronto, Mississauga, Burlington, Vaughan, Brampton and Markham require that tree owners obtain an arborist report from a certified arborist prior to the submission of the tree removal and tree injury permit. This report will need to explain the conditions of the tree/trees in question, the property’s information, the plan for compensating the city’s green space to make up for the tree that is to be removed. Once the property owner has obtained the arborist report, only then can the tree removal application be submitted to the forestry department of their respective municipality. Some municipalities like Oakville, only require an arborist report if the tree/trees are being removed due to construction. Even though construction is one of the most common reasons property owners request the removal of a healthy tree, this reason does not guarantee the approval of the tree cutting application by the forestry department. Often a certified arborist can work with the construction project’s engineer to amend the construction drawings to move the proposed building away from the healthy tree and save the life of that tree. Only in special cases where the building is not transferrable, then that would necessitate the approval of that tree cutting application.
