Phones with foldable screens have been on the market for a few years now. The fourth generation of the Samsung Z Fold and Flip series was presented just this fall, but Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Huawei have also produced such mobile phones.
There have also been several reports in recent months that Apple has already toyed with the idea of development. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, however, it is unlikely that Apple will produce a foldable iPhone before 2025 and throw it into the market with a high-end retail tag like the Samsung price in Pakistan
That’s why a Chinese YouTuber and his engineer friend decided to take matters into their own hands. Finally, after 200 days of work and spending thousands of yuan, they made the world’s first — unofficial, of course — foldable iPhone.
The YouTuber KJMX, head of the Technological Aesthetics channel, originally set out to build a foldable iPhone that kept as many original parts as possible. Finally, after days of trying and breaking multiple iPhone screens, they managed to bend the iPhone display.
The second piece of the puzzle was to develop a suitable hinge mechanism for their iPhone. Given the complexity of designing the hinge from scratch, they first thought of taking it from a Galaxy Z Flip – only to find that it wasn’t quite right. Instead, the pair modified the Motorola Razr’s hinge.
In order to fit all the functional components of the foldable iPhone inside the body, several internal components had to be scrapped. So they got rid of the original battery and put in a modified 1000 mAh unit. They also threw away a speaker and the wireless charging coil. Finally, a custom iOS version was also installed, which included several optimizations for the folding panel.
