Rings Inlaid with Meteorite: How Thorum Is Connecting Unique People on Earth to the Magic of the Universe

Traditionally, those who are engaged have used gold or silver in their wedding rings, but now something from the deepest reaches of the cosmos is enabling them to express their love for each other: meteorite. Thorum, whose materials include everything from dinosaur bone and whiskey barrels to damascus steel, is changing how they celebrate their commitment with its hand-crafted meteorite wedding rings. Now, no matter how many years pass or how many challenges the couple encounters together, they will always be reminded of something that is bigger than themselves and transcends time: their love.

Thorum is a husband-and-wife-owned jeweler in Tampa, Florida. Caleb Martin, its CEO and Founder, has been designing and hand-crafting unique wedding rings for almost 13 years with the help of his VP and wife, Steph. Together, they have slowly grown Thorum into one of the most unusual and in-demand jewelers in the United States. Their success centers on their commitment to creativity as well as a deep belief that wedding rings should express the uniqueness of the wearer. Caleb has personally made over 10,000 rings from durable yet beautiful materials, including ethical diamond simulants, titanium, tungsten carbide, damascus steel, ceramic, carbon fiber, ironwood, whiskey barrels, dinosaur bone, and, yes, meteorites. Each ring celebrates the passions of the individual and is an extension of who they truly are.

Caleb turned to meteorite in part because he was intrigued by its symbolism. He explains that the meteorite used in Thorum’s rings was formed 4.5 billion years ago and fell to Earth sometime within the last 30,000 years. It was discovered in Namibia in the early 1800s.

“I was fascinated that throughout so many of humanity’s changes, accomplishments, and struggles, this meteorite has been here. It is a reminder that there is a bigger picture for all of us, one that is incredibly beautiful,” Caleb says. “I decided to inlay meteorite into Thorum’s wedding rings so that couples could have that same perspective. No matter what happens, for better or for worse, their love is as ever present as the meteorite.”

In his workshop, Caleb set about the painstaking process of designing Thorum’s meteorite wedding rings. His goal was to preserve the uniqueness and vibrancy of the meteorite’s striations, which contain highly concentrated nickel and iron as well as trace amounts of copper. Using a mill and a magnet, Caleb captured shavings and then inlaid them into tungsten carbide, titanium, and other materials. He ultimately created eleven meteorite rings for men and three for women, including Black Meteorite, The Gibeon, The Armstrong, and The Asteroid. In keeping with Thorum’s commitment to the environment, each ring is shipped free of plastic and also comes with a lifetime warranty.

After delighting couples with his meteorite wedding rings, Caleb went one step further and launched The Meteorite Watch. With its patent-pending, minimalist design, the owner can wear a piece of the asteroid belt right on their wrist. The unusual watch has been a big hit with groomsmen and couples celebrating their anniversaries.

Caleb invites everyone to visit Thorum’s website, where they can learn more about his meteorite wedding rings and explore unforgettable, meaningful designs. “How people express their lifelong commitment to each other is changing, which is truly exciting,” he says. “At Thorum, we hope that couples will be inspired by our rings as they go on their journeys together. It is amazing that as you navigate life and all of its inevitable difficulties, your ring can remind you that your love is powerful and everlasting.”
