Official London Theatre – Only Fools and Horses: The Characters

As an all-time British classic television show, Only Fools and Horses has been revered for generations, with its comedy resonating with people of all generations. Set in Peckham, local wheeler dealers aim to make their fortune through unscrupulous business dealings that ultimately lead to absurd outcomes.

And now, the fan’s favourite programme has made it to the theatre stage – lovely jubbly! If you’re too young for its original airing, we want to help you understand who the main characters are in advance of the West End show.

Del Boy

Derek “Del Boy” Trotter is one of the most well-known characters ever in British television; his charisma is undeniable, even if it unwittingly leads to business mishaps and financial misfortune, despite telling his half-brother and business partner, “this time next year, we’ll be millionaires”. Del was a lovable cockney tradesman who spawned dozens of catchphrases and poor French skills to the delight of audiences.

Vinnie Jones is the high-profile star playing the role of Del, which seems perfectly apt and is a coup for the production.

Rodney

The younger and perhaps more cynical half-brother of Del Boy, Rodney always appeared more cautious and uneasy about Del’s plans and was often proved right, even if he bore the brunt of the ensuing chaos. Despite an acquaintance routinely calling him Dave, the character of Rodney was integral to the show’s success, as we see ourselves in this unassuming man dragged along by his brother’s grand plans.

Grandad

An endearing character who passed away throughout the show’s running and was greatly missed. This hard-of-hearing older man was difficult to converse with, but his sometimes down-trodden charm couldn’t help but render affection from those around him.

Uncle Albert

Appearing in the seasons once Grandad passed away, Grandad regularly harked back to his days “during the war” to the annoyance of Del Boy and Rodney. He often joins the protagonists in their antics with his zest for life

Cassandra

The tumultuous nature of Rodney’s dealing with Del Boy often threatens the harmony of his relationship with Cassandra, a kind-hearted individual who appears to be just what Rodney needs in his life.

Trigger

For further light-hearted relief, Trigger is a harmless yet dim character who regularly confuses situations but is loyal and friendly to the Trotter brothers. His tale of having the same broom for 20 years, with 17 new heads and 14 new handles, exemplifies his dim-wittedness.

Raquel

Del Boy eventually finds a partner willing to tolerate his enigmatic conduct. She mainly appears to have the patience of a saint, but that doesn’t mean his behaviour isn’t detrimental to Raquel’s commitment to the relationship.

Boycie

Boycie represents somewhat of a nemesis for Del Boy and perhaps envies his ostensible success. Nonetheless, Del and Boycie regularly drink and share stories with Boycie’s partner, Marlene.
