Leamington Spa, UK – July 4, 2025 — Mills CNC Limited, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of CNC machine tools and automation systems, has launched a bold new Green Manufacturing Initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of machining operations across the UK and Ireland.
The initiative includes the introduction of energy-efficient Doosan machine models, the adoption of eco-friendly automation solutions, and the expansion of Mills CNC’s own internal sustainability practices. It also involves educational efforts to help customers reduce waste, lower energy usage, and optimise production processes with sustainability in mind.
“Sustainability is no longer a future concern—it’s a present responsibility,” said Tony Dale, Managing Director of Mills CNC. “Manufacturing must play a leading role in the UK’s journey to net zero, and we are committed to equipping our customers with the tools and knowledge to do exactly that.”
Energy-Efficient Machines, Smart Monitoring Systems
At the core of the initiative is a new range of Doosan machine tools with advanced energy-saving capabilities. These machines incorporate:
- Low standby power consumption
- Smart spindle motor control
- Regenerative braking systems
- LED machine lighting
- Efficient lubrication and coolant systems
All machines now come with optional energy consumption dashboards, enabling manufacturers to track and manage energy usage in real-time.
“Monitoring power usage at the machine level is the first step toward reduction,” said Clare Portman, Head of Technical Services. “Many customers are shocked when they realise how much energy is consumed unnecessarily during idle time. Smart control systems allow them to act on that knowledge.”
Automation that Saves Energy and Cuts Waste
In addition to energy-efficient machines, Mills CNC is promoting automated manufacturing cells that reduce manual handling, streamline workflows, and minimise material waste. These cells can include:
- Collaborative robots (cobots) for part loading and unloading
- Automated pallet changers to reduce downtime
- Tool wear monitoring systems to reduce scrap
- Closed-loop feedback systems for quality control
The company has also partnered with environmental consultants to help customers calculate their carbon footprint and create customised emissions-reduction strategies.
Greener Operations at Mills HQ
Mills CNC is leading by example by implementing a range of green policies at its Leamington Spa headquarters:
- Installation of solar panels on the facility’s roof (due for completion Q4 2025)
- EV charging points for staff and visitors
- Transition to paperless documentation and digital invoicing
- LED lighting retrofits throughout offices and workshops
- Comprehensive waste recycling and coolant reclamation programmes
“We want to walk the talk,” Dale explained. “Our customers expect us to lead in this space, and that starts with ensuring our own operations are as efficient and sustainable as the machines we supply.”
Educating for a Sustainable Future
As part of the initiative, Mills CNC has rolled out Sustainability in CNC Manufacturing workshops via its Training Academy. These new modules focus on:
- Eco-conscious design and tooling strategies
- Reducing coolant and lubricant waste
- Selecting recyclable materials
- Reducing carbon footprint through process optimisation
The Academy is also partnering with customers to train their staff on how to implement energy-saving protocols across the shop floor.
“When engineers are educated on the environmental impact of their operations, they start to make smarter, greener decisions,” said Portman. “It’s all about awareness, accountability, and action.”
Customer Incentives and Support
To support manufacturers on their sustainability journey, Mills CNC is offering:
- Free sustainability audits for existing customers
- Discounted service plans for machines using energy-efficient settings
- Trade-in programmes to upgrade outdated equipment with greener alternatives
- Guidance on accessing government green manufacturing grants
These efforts are helping SMEs reduce operational costs while also working toward environmental goals.
“It’s good for the planet, and it’s good for business,” Dale added. “Efficient machines save money—and our customers appreciate that.”
Industry Recognition and Next Steps
Mills CNC’s Green Manufacturing Initiative has already drawn praise from trade bodies and sustainability groups, including Make UK and the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA). The company is also exploring membership in Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to formalise its net zero ambitions by 2030.
Looking ahead, Mills plans to develop a Green CNC Certification programme, recognising manufacturers who demonstrate leadership in sustainable production practices using Mills CNC equipment.
“We’re just getting started,” said Dale. “As the industry evolves, so will our role in leading it responsibly.”
