Health Carousel Focuses on Employees to Improve Social Impact

Guided by its core values of teamwork, integrity, excellence, and service, Health Carousel, a leading provider of healthcare workforce solutions, is committed to making communities better. With more than 650 administrative employees in seven offices, the company has served 9.7 million patients since its inception in 2004 and is continually recognized as one of the best places to work.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Health Carousel remains dedicated to its higher purpose of improving lives and making healthcare work better. In 2021, the company served 646,566 patients worldwide. To maintain its status as a leading talent management company, Health Carousel strives to ensure its operating practices and initiatives are not only profitable but also ethical and legal.

Details of how the company and its three primary service brands – Health Carousel Locum Tenens, Health Carousel Travel Nursing, and Health Carousel International – put this higher purpose into action are outlined in its 2021 Social Impact Report.

Delivering Help Where It’s Needed

With a range of services, Health Carousel delivers innovative solutions customized to meet the unique workforce management needs of healthcare providers around the world. Here is a summary of the company’s social impact in 2021.

Health Carousel Locum Tenens

For healthcare facilities that struggled to meet staffing demand during the pandemic, Health Carousel was there to help with its Locum Tenens program. As a six-time recipient of a Best of Staffing Award, the company helps connect healthcare providers with a nationwide network of experienced physicians and advanced practitioners who are available for temporary or long-term assignments. In addition to providing highly qualified staff in every specialty, Health Carousel gives clients access to a dedicated recruiting team, supported by the latest technology, who can assist them with credentialing, verification, and onboarding.

In 2021, Health Carousel served more than 64,000 patients through its Locum Tenens program and expanded its ability to meet staffing needs through the acquisition of two companies. In January, it acquired Houston-based Vitruvian Medical, a leading anesthesia-focused locum tenens program, and in February, it acquired Connecticut-based MEDPATH. With these acquisitions, Health Carousel became the 11th largest locum tenens company in the country, providing medical professionals full-service concierge-style recruiting and placement services as well as digital experience options when seeking temporary assignments.

Health Carousel Travel Nursing

Throughout 2021, Health Carousel continued to provide in-demand staffing for healthcare facilities. The company has built a thriving community of talented and highly qualified travel nurses and allied professionals ready to work wherever and whenever they are needed. With its nationwide reach, streamlined digital experience, and clinically led support team, Health Carousel has been the remedy for many healthcare facilities plagued by staff shortages and career burnout.

Health Carousel Travel Nursing served more than 900,000 patients in 2021 and won several awards, including Best of Staffing Talent Satisfaction, BluePipes Best Travel Nursing Company, Best of Staffing Client Satisfaction, Gypsy Nurse Top Travel Nursing Company, Highway Hypodermics, and American Staffing Association’s Healthcare Staffing Employee of the Year.

Health Carousel International

Health Carousel International assists global healthcare professionals in finding career opportunities within the United States. Through its international recruitment program, PassportUSA, the company has built a sustainable pool of registered nurses, therapists, and medical technologists who are available for interview and selection anywhere.

The impact of the company’s global recruitment practices was felt by healthcare professionals and patients alike in 2021. Serving nearly 650,000 patients, Health Carousel International also assisted 347 recruits in passing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam and 299 recruits in passing the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX).

Even after the recruitment process ends and recruits arrive in the United States, PassportUSA continues to provide guidance to them. Through its Arrivals program, Health Carousel connects recruits with a dedicated arrival coordinator at their assignment destination to ensure a seamless transition into the country. In addition, the Arrivals team encourages recruits to bring immediate family members with them. The arrival coordinator assists with logistics, making it possible for all family members to experience the American Dream.

Recognizing Those Who Go “Above and Beyond”

Honoring the hard work and dedication of employees is important to Health Carousel. Here are some ways the company recognizes those who go “above and beyond” the call of duty.

The DAISY Foundation

Through its unique partnership with the DAISY Foundation, Health Carousel recognizes the extraordinary work of nurses throughout the year. Nurses are nominated for exceptional care and compassion by their recruiters or others. At a minimum, nominees must demonstrate excellent clinical skills, focus on meeting patient and family goals, collaborate with other members of the healthcare team, and use best practices in patient care.

Winning nurses receive a certificate, pin, and unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe titled “A Healer’s Touch.” In addition, they are featured on the Spotlight page of Health Carousel’s website with a picture and story about their nomination.

The American Red Cross

At the end of 2021, Health Carousel honored employees for their donations to the American Red Cross when tornadoes struck Kentucky. Working with local schools, employees volunteered their time to gather and deliver supplies to those most affected. In addition, Health Carousel matched employee monetary donations to the Red Cross for its work on the ground – raising a total of $5,000.

At its 2022 Kickoff, Health Carousel also recognized the charitable efforts of employees via its Social Impact Awards, a new category designed to honor those who go above and beyond in giving back to others and supporting local communities.

Community Impact Awards

In January 2021, Health Carousel received a prestigious Medical Mutual SHARE Award, presented by Smart Business. This award honors companies that best exemplify employee-driven community service, philanthropy, and volunteerism. Health Carousel was also recognized in the fall of 2021 by the American Staffing Association (ACA) for its outstanding social responsibility initiatives and ethical policies. Winning this award was a major accomplishment for the company.

Supporting Change

What continues to set Health Carousel apart from the competition is its ongoing commitment to a higher purpose – improving lives and making healthcare work better. One way the company puts this into action is through its Conversation Partners program, which is designed to help foreign-trained healthcare professional candidates prepare for the English proficiency exam (IELTS). In 2021, 43 employee conversation partners logged more than 100 hours of volunteer work, helping coach international candidates on their English-speaking skills.

Committed to the Bigger Picture

Another way Health Carousel puts its higher purpose into action is by focusing on the big picture, whether that means connecting with employees on a personal level or preparing the next generation of healthcare providers.

Fighting Cancer in the Fall

Because cancer touches the lives of so many Health Carousel employees and families, the company’s second annual Fighting Cancer in the Fall event was a big success. In its second year, the 2021 event was bigger and better than before. Designed to educate, connect, and support employees and give back to the community, the event featured a blood drive and fundraising raffle. Not only did the company raise $5,000 for the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Red Cross, but employees also donated enough blood to potentially save 165 lives.

Health Carousel employees, family, and friends also participated in a virtual fundraiser benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Mary Grace Memorial Foundation. The event raised $20,000 thanks to matching funds from Health Carousel leaders.

DePaul Cristo Rey Internship Program

Focusing on the next generation of talent management professionals, Health Carousel invited four DePaul Cristo Rey High School students to be part of its 2021-2022 work-study program. The goal is to introduce students to various aspects of this high-growth industry, helping them build important business skills and exposing them to professional development opportunities. Students also practice job search skills and learn about sales culture.

Growing Into the Future

In 2021, Health Carousel consisted of 618 internal employees; 250 persons were hired with 4 percent diversity and 56 percent of individuals in management positions identifying as women.

In response to ongoing uncertainty in the talent market, where jobs outnumber job seekers by 86 percent, Health Carousel has taken a creative approach to increase hires. In commemoration of Women’s Equality day in August 2021, the company partnered with a local brewery to host an event featuring a guest speaker and women-owned businesses, vendors, and partners. The event attracted 275 people and raised more than $2,700 for two local nonprofits focusing on children and the LGBTQIA+ community. The day also incorporated a recruitment component that resulted in a 63 percent increase in monthly applications and a 117 percent increase in traffic to Health Carousel’s career site.

Leading in Ethical Recruitment and Sustainability

Since its inception in 2004, Health Carousel has been a leader in ethical and sustainable recruitment. In addition to its Light the Way initiative, through which it funnels all of its programs and activities, the company is a founding member of the American Association of International Healthcare Recruitment (AAIHR) and adheres to its code of ethics. It also helped create the industry standard for ethical recruitment practices.

Both Health Carousel and Health Carousel Philippines have received the status of a Certified Ethical Recruiter by the Alliance for Ethical Recruitment Practices, a nonprofit that promotes the fair, transparent recruitment of global healthcare workers for employment in the United States. Likewise, the company’s affiliate recruitment partner in the Philippines is the Philippines Overseas Employment Administration licensed.

Providing Updated Employee Benefits

Health Carousel is committed to providing employees the tools they need to live their best lives. In support, the company has invested in the digital platform Homethrive, which offers free virtual resources and 1:1 support to caregivers through a licensed social worker for all internal employees.

In 2021, Health Carousel introduced a Hospital Indemnity Insurance Plan, which provides further support for employees. This plan offers a cash payout in the event of hospitalization for illness, injury, or maternity care, which can be used to cover hospital bills, living expenses, or whatever the employee pleases. The goal is to allow employees to focus more on recovery and less on figuring out how to pay for care.

Also in 2021, Health Carousel started offering a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA) policy. Working employees can use FSA to pay for expenses incurred to care for children aged 12 and younger, as well as adult tax dependents who are not able to care for themselves.

Valuing Employee Feedback

Health Carousel leaders view feedback from employees as a gift. Likewise, they see employee engagement as critical to the company’s success because it can lead to increased career satisfaction, motivation, and productivity. Therefore, Health Carousel strives to ensure all employees have the support and resources they need to succeed.

The company uses several ways to gather employee feedback and measure engagement, which helps it learn what actions to take to positively influence the employee experience. Every year, Health Carousel administers a survey to gather comprehensive, point-in-time feedback on various topics and identify trends to focus on for improvement.

A Time for Change

It’s apparent that through 2021 – one of the most challenging years in recent history – Health Carousel has remained dedicated to its social impact. By focusing on its employees, the care they receive, and the opportunities they are provided, Health Carousel continues to thrive as an innovative company focused on improving the world we live in.
