All Facets of the Sun: Yellow Diamond

A yellow diamond is a diamond that differs from the usual transparent color scheme. About 90% of natural diamonds, referred to as “yellow”, are endowed with a slight yellowish tint, and only 10% of the remaining stones have a pronounced yellow color. Loose yellow diamonds are perfect for jewelry. For such truly unique crystals, a classification group was allocated – fantasy.

In fact, there are a number of “names” that fancy yellow diamonds have come to be called over time. The smallest number of yellow stones are called canaries, while others, more simple, are called ordinary. Canary stone has an intense bright yellow color, while a regular diamond is endowed with a slightly saturated yellow tint.

Origin

Basically, diamonds are formed in the deep bowels of the Earth at high temperatures. Under such conditions, carbon atoms are able to line up in a crystal lattice, which is characteristic only of a diamond: it has a very complex structure, it contains two simple crystal lattices. When merged, they are grouped into a tetrahedron, which looks like a polyhedron containing four triangles in its structure.

At their tops are carbon atoms, between which covalent solid bonds are formed. Thanks to them, the crystal lattice is able to give the diamond endurance and strength.

Where are yellow diamonds mined?

On our planet, there are various deposits where fancy yellow diamonds are mined. But the most popular countries to find are Australia, Central Africa, Borneo, Angola, Brazil, Tanzania, Nambia, and Sierra Leone.

Diamond Properties

The word “diamond” when translated into Greek means “invincible” or “invincible.” This incredible mineral got its name due to one of its unique properties – unsurpassed strength. Not a single precious stone of other groups or an artificial object is able to damage and scratch it.

Intensity

Ordinary yellow diamonds are divided into four groups according to the color intensity gradient:

  1. near colors, which equates to the G, H, I, J color gamuts, according to the GIA classification;
  2. faint yellow corresponding to shades K, L, M;
  3. very light yellow, including colors N, P, Q, R, S;
  4. light yellow corresponding to colors S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z.

Cut

Depending on the cut, diamonds are round, pear-shaped, oval, and heart-shaped, and also include princess, marquise, emerald and baguette cuts. The cut is divided by quality: bad, good, very good, and ideal.

When choosing a yellow diamond, you should always worry about the availability of its certificate and carefully study the characteristics listed in this document.
