A Brief Introduction to 100GBASE-LR4

100GBASE-LR4 is a new 100G Ethernet standard that offers a lot of benefits for data center operators and enterprises, designed to support 100Gbps connections over distances up to 10km. It utilizes laser technology to provide a low-latency and reliable connection over fiber optic cables. In this blog post, we will discuss the basics of 100GBASE-LR4 and how it can benefit your business.

What is a 100G QSFP28 LR4 Optical Transceiver?

The optical module is a kind of optical transceiver module that plays the role of photoelectric conversion, in which the transmitting end converts the electrical signal into an optical signal, which is transmitted through the optical fiber, and the receiving end receives and then converts the optical signal into an electrical signal. Since data communication requires 100 Gb/s links, the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet working group has increased the implementation to 10 kilometers (100GBASE-LR4). The “G” in 100G refers to the unit of the transmission rate of optical signals. LR refers to the transmission distance, which generally represents the transmission of 10km. Therefore, the QSFP28 LR4 optical module has a transmission rate of 100G and an optical transceiver module with a transmission distance of 10km.

QSFP28-100G-LR4 is a hot-pluggable full-duplex optical module, in line with IEEE 802.3ba standard, dual LC interface, working wavelengths of 1295, 1300, 1304, 1309nm, specially used for 100G Ethernet long-distance transmission, in a single Mode fiber jumpers can reach a transmission distance of 10 kilometers.

Convert 4 channels of 25Gbps electrical signals into 4 channels of LAN WDM optical signals, and then use MUX or WDM to multiplex them into a single channel to achieve 100G optical signal transmission. At the receiving end, the module uses DEMUX to demultiplex the 100G optical input into 4 channels of LAN WDM optical signals, and then convert them into 4 channels of electrical signals and output channels.

Benefits of 100GBASE-LR4

The QSFP28-100G-LR4 optical module is very suitable for long-distance connections in data centers and enterprise networks. The specific advantages are as follows.

Package type

The 100GBASE-LR4 10km QSFP28 optical transceiver module adopts the package type QSFP28. 100G has a variety of package forms, including CFP/CFP2/CFP4, CXP and QSFP28. Among these different 100G packaging forms, the QSFP28 optical module has become the main packaging method for the 100G network due to its advantages of high port density, low power consumption, and low cost.

Appearance size

The first-generation 100G optical module is a CFP optical module, which is very large in size. Later, CFP2 and CFP4 optical modules appeared. Among them, the CFP4 optical module is the latest generation of 100G optical modules. Its width is only 1/4 of the CFP optical module, and the package size is package size is the same as that of the QSFP+ optical module. The package size of the QSFP28 optical module is smaller than that of the CFP4 optical module, which means that the QSFP28 optical module has a higher port density on the switch.

Power consumption

100GBASE-LR4 10km QSFP28 is a 4-channel full-duplex transceiver module. The power consumption of this optical module usually does not exceed 3.5W, while the power consumption of other 100G optical modules is usually between 6W and 24W. From this point of view, the power consumption of QSFP28 optical modules is much lower than that of other 100G optical modules.

Transmission rate

The 100G optical module is an optical module product born in order to adapt to the trend of the network market gradually developing from 10G to 40G and 100G. The transmission rate is 100G, and it plays a crucial role in building a 100G network system.
