After you have completed the arrangement of the entire song, then you are ready to go into the recording studio or at home to record your work. This means that you have started to officially enter music production. At this time you need to know about recording, mixing, and mastering.

When you have determined the arrangement, you can record at home or go to the studio to record each track in a solid manner.

The so-called recording is to use a microphone to pick up the sound, or directly into the recording interface, so that it is recording.

For example, if you have a rhythm guitar and lead guitar in your arrangement, you can use the microphone to pick up the sound from the speaker, or direct DI signals to the recording interface. Of course, if you decide to use a computer to make the audio track, you don’t need to record. If you want to listen offline, you can search “recording music” on youtube and use flvto youtube to mp3 converter to download it.

It is assumed that an orchestra may not have the funds to record strings and drum kits in the early stage, but hopes that its songs can achieve the best results. At this time, strings and drum kits can be replaced by sound sources.

Then record the guitar, bass, and vocals at home or go to the studio to record them.

Finally, organize the files and hand them to the mixer to complete the recording.

In my opinion, recording can be said to be the second most important project besides arrangement. Is there a way to faithfully present what the arranger wants and give the mixer the highest recording quality.

2. Mixing

When you have finished recording, the next step is the most important mixing part.

My definition of “mixing”: Use effects to process the tracks included in the song to maximize the excitement of the song.

The “track contained in the song” in the definition can be drums, guitars, bass, and vocals completed during the recording stage. It can also be any sound made by a computer. For example, genres such as hip-hop and electronics are rarely recorded on real instruments.

The effector in the mix includes EQ, Compressor, and space system. If you are a guitarist, you should be familiar with these.

If you are not a guitarist, you can imagine that we are editing a picture with white balance, contrast and hue that can be adjusted. For mixing, you can imagine this way and use all kinds of effects on the pictures. Fix it to what everyone likes.

The purpose of mixing is to achieve a sense of excitement, such as how strong the drums are, how loud the vocals are in the entire music, and the placement of guitars and keyboards are all within the scope of mixing.

So in fact, this step involves a lot of procedures, such as volume adjustment, frequency adjustment, instrument position adjustment, sound field and space adjustment, and tone optimization.

But on the other hand, if the recording is not good enough, don’t think about how mixing can help you.

3. Mastering

When the mixing is complete, the final step is post-mastering, and “what is the mastering?”

A lot of people often confuse mastering and mixing. It seems that they use effects to process audio?

Yes, the essence is the same, but the biggest difference is that the mixing is microscopic and the mastering is macroscopic.

Mixing cares about the balance between various instruments and vocals.

Post-mastering is to pull the completed mix to a macro perspective, whether the completed mix needs to be wider, with more explosive low frequencies, or more prominent high frequencies.

When a mastering engineer performs mastering, he needs to do the following things:

  • Push the volume of this song to the volume of a commercial record, and not deviate too much from the original mix
  • Check this song in the same style, is there anything missing? It may be that the low frequency is not enough, the high frequency is not bright enough, etc., you can fine-tune the post-mastering step
  • Check whether the result of listening to the mix of this song on each device needs to be fine-tuned

In the above two and three points, the mastering engineer does use effects to achieve his goals, but you can see that he uses a higher position to adjust the overall music.

Suppose you have creative energy, but you know friends who are good at composing music. You can cooperate with him for a long time, you write the song and he arranges the music, and finally find someone to help with the music production part.

When you first become a musician, you can do everything by yourself. But gradually, you will find that if you want to create higher-quality works or produce works faster, you need to cooperate with powerful people in various fields.
