If you really think about it, the information you have on your phone is far more valuable than the phone itself. The passwords, pictures, videos, notes, and other information that you have gathered for some time can suddenly be wiped from your phone simply because of human error, software malfunction, or physical damage. Just because you are not able to access your information from your phone does not mean that it is a complete goner.

Here is how you can access data from your broken device, and prevent the stressful situation from happening again.

Backup Your iPhone

Even though Apple produces durable devices and protective accessories, iPhones can still fall victim, literally, to damage and other causes of data loss.

The first way to access data from your broken phone is by accessing your iCloud. iCloud is Apple’s storage system that allows you to back up your data into an account, meaning the same data can be accessed on any device logged into that device.

If you never thought about backing up your data on iCloud or your computer, use this as a lesson. In the case that your information is permanently deleted or your device won’t turn on, and it is not backed up, you’ll need to seek help from a professional repair service.

Apple has a repair service that can be a bit pricey. Thankfully, there are also affordable repair services that offer affordable prices too.

Repair services such as iFixYouri will run a diagnostic test on your device for free. If your phone broke due to water damage, and your data is still not accessible after the repair, iFixYouri will not charge you.

When you are finally able to access your data again, here is how to back up your information:

  • Make sure you’re connected to WiFi
  • Go to Settings> [Your Name] > iCloud
  • Tap “iCloud Backup”
  • Tap “Back Up Now” and make sure you remain connected to WiFi until the process is complete

There is also an option to backup your device automatically. Just make sure you are connected to WiFi, follow the steps above, make sure your phone is locked, and make sure you have enough iCloud storage.

Back-Up Data on Your Computer

  • Use a USB cord to connect your phone to your computer
  • Select “Trust This Computer”
  • Find your device on the computer
  • Select “Backup Now,” and wait for your phone to complete the process

Take Advantage of Your Google Account

Having a Google account means more than being able to access your Gmail, watch YouTube videos, or navigate with your GPS.

One of the most valuable components of owning a Google account is Google Drive. Google Drive is Google’s storage system that allows users to store, synchronize, and share files.

If you want to store pictures and videos from your phone as well as important documents, you can easily upload them to Google Drive and make unique folders to stay organized. Google automatically organizes your data into categories such as PDFs, Photos and Images, Presentations, and Videos.

The most convenient aspect of Google Drive is that this data can be accessed on any device that connects to your Google account.

No matter how bad the damage is on your phone, at least you know your information is stored in a safe place.

What if You Own an Android?

An Apple device or iCloud is not necessary for you to access data from your phone.

If your Android has a broken screen, you can still access and transfer important data without cutting up your fingers with an OTG adapter.

An OTG adapter is a small cord that allows you to connect your phone to a computer mouse. Rather than scraping your fingers, use the mouse to save pictures, access your contacts list, and upload important information to Google Drive or any other storage service.

To access information, you can also download recovery apps such as DiskDigger for Android, 7-data Recovery, and MobiSaver for Android.

No matter what route you take to restore your information, the only solution left sometimes is to visit a repair expert. If you do not want to bother with having your device repaired, you can always sell it for parts.
